Pure Head Pure Heart-Abhijata's Talk at Geeta's Intensive December 1, 2014

Abhijata was an inspiration!!! Her stories as the grandchild of Guruji are heartfelt and you can imagine yourself right there. Here are some tid-bits from my notes, which were hard to take because I didn't want to miss hearing anything, she was so engaging! [Some of the quotes may be not exactly word for word]

Yoga cannot be explained by words, you have to experience it. Yoga cannot be explained or understood by words only. Guruji went from "Experience to the word, not word to experience."

"If you are honest with your approach, the goal is near." -Abhijata

Guruji said "The body is universal, the mind is individual."

"I am not a genius, I am common sense." -Guruji

Abhijata explained that Guruji defined Yoga in 5 ways:

1. Snia (?) Vritti Nirodhah-Each fiber is held, each organ, all is involved

2. ? Vritti Nirodhah-The interior connections of the body from skin to Self and from Self to skin. Guruji talked about how we take holidays then come home and say we need a vacation from our vacation. Guruji said "my holiday, my work, my sadhana is in my practice"

3. Dukha Vritti Nirodhah-Dukha is complaints, these stop you from seeing what truly is. Abhijata was excited to do sirsasana for 20 minutes and she was excited to tell Guruji that she did it. He then asked her what she did while doing it. She said she did sirsasana! He said, no what were you doing in it? If you are focused on ending the pose or not paying attention because of pain or thoughts, then you are wasting time. Guruji fell and hurt his knee, Abhijata told him to stay home from teaching the Medical Class. Guruji would not stay home, he said "My body has pain, but I am alright." He said his students needed him.

4. Samskara Vritti Nirodhah-Why do we do yoga and our partners or friends do not? It is because we have a deep samskara (imprint). Abhijata was having trouble with her sacrum when she was trying to do backbends, it was really stiff. Guruji saw and told her to stand at the end of the trestle and turn her feet out like "Charlie Chaplin." She was scared and didn't want to do it because the feet are not 'supposed' to turn out. She did it, then asked Guruji why it helped and he said because the sacrum moves better that way; simple answer-This is de-conditioning!

"Transformation can only happen through practice. Without being watchful, there is no sensitivity" -Abhijata

5. ? Vritti Nirodhah-Pure head + Pure heart=Kriya Yoga, total surrendor

"Without intelligence, there is no sensitivity. Without sensitivity, there is no intelligence."-Abhijata.

Sensitivity to reflection, not the action.
Discipline and purity should come from within
Yoga is for the culture of the mind
Be aware of every pose

Kriya Yoga-Union of a Pure head & a Pure heart:

1. Tapas-PROCESS-hard work, heat, burn, shine, fire=gives the bright light of wisdom & purity. Teaches the conduct of life. Abhyasa prepares us for tapas.

2. Svadhyaya-STATE-When you are with yourself, you do not have to add things-get this or that, need this or that. Create awareness. Once an action is done, don't be attached to the action! Guruji said "I do not act for the action."

"Life means to be alive, problems will always be there, navigate with yoga through them." -Guruji

3. Ishvara Pranidana-EMOTION-This cannot be taught. Action is the closest to being yours, we don't own the breath, it is borrowed from the cosmos, we do not own this body, it belongs to God. This is an offering to God.

....At the end of Guruji's life, he was asking God to take him, this made Abhijata sad. She told him that if the work is never ending, then he doesn't have to go. He replied that he taught everything he can. He had no anxiety, no worry, no attachment to living.

"Yoga is like Space" -Abhijata

Inspiration!

"Disease & onslaughts may come, but if our yogic practice profoundly touches our hearts, death will come majestically, in spite of the disease."             -BKS Iyengar

Made it to Pune! 2014 Adventure-Day 1

Wow, it is intense here! So glad to have made it with such amazing friends. The Institute was extremely welcoming today. Immediately, I felt Guruji's missing physical presence which was a bit emotional. I saw an empty chair where he sat, the empty trestle he used to practice at, and his chair in the library where I first met him with a big photo of him on it. When this sense of missing came in, then the smiles of everyone took the ache away. Guruji's grandson was so very nice! Thank you to all of the helpers, it is very organized!

Kate cried when she went into the main hall for the first time, it was precious. It is not easy coming or being here. The pollution, noise, and traffic is intense, plus my room reeks of moth balls. My belly is already rumbling from different foods and water....only about 5 minutes of hot water to shower then ice cold...a hard bed....not being able to get money out of ATM's.....but it is all worth it. To be able to learn Iyengar Yoga from the source. As my new friend Ananada (Bliss) was talking about, it is a special time to all come together, not only for Geeta's 70th Birthday, but to keep Iyengar Yoga going. The invocation of about 700+ people on Monday will be quite special.

Oh, and I met Patricia Walden at the airport!!! We talked a while about my migraines. She was very interested in how I practice. Our conversation was inspiring on both ends. Then, heeee heee...my rickshaw driver was chasing hers around and then we passed her, quite a comical scene of the yoga students in rickshaws honking and zipping around. Feels like a year of adventures in one day.

Here we all are in the apartment I will share with Lois...Happy crew!

The Day Guruji Passed

Ironically today, I bought a ticket to India for December to go to Geeta's Intensive and to take Medical classes at RIMYI. A few hours later, Guruji passed onto/into another realm. My dearest teacher Elizabeth reminded me that "It is powerful to know the beat goes on..." Yes, that is right, the true heartbeat of Iyengar Yoga will continue.

Right after dear Guruji passed, rain poured down so hard. Thunder, lightening, wind....it was as if I could hear the Iyengar family and Yoga family crying. Crying because when a person is that giving, our hearts fill up so much, then like water, our hearts drip out all of the love that is over-flowing.

Today, I taught a class and we dedicated the class to Guruji. We all went around and spoke of our favorite poses and the poses we need to work on; it was very fun!

As I read the meaning of asana, and watched Guruji's face light up with smiles at the end of the video above, I was reminded of the joy that Yoga brings. I love catching students smile when they are practicing. We all have unique relationships with asanas. They can: get along with us, be a challenge, wander away, come back again, teach the unexpected, show hidden aliments, be healing, provide relaxation, give security, open the door to intuition, fly with freedom, embrace us, give us something to hold onto, and be with us no matter what.

Sutra II.46 sthira sukham asanam

Asana is perfect firmness of the body, steadiness of the intelligence and benevolence of the spirit.

"Performance of the asana should be nourishing and illuminative."

-Light on the Yoga Sutras-BKS Iyengar pg. 149

Before class while watching the video, we noticed that Guruji's chest got bigger as he became older. During class, I would mention the chest and I saw my students' chests expand dramatically. I went home and practiced Halasana. As I looked at my own chest, I felt as if it was expanding like Guruji's (not as majestically, of course ;). His imprint is in my body and his teachings of Light live on.

"You are a living example that you are living. And as you are living, you want to improve. You want to be better than you are. This is the golden vitamin that will enable you to progress."
-BKS Iyengar

Guruji never gave up with his practice. He never gave up on life. I have faith he was at peace when his time to  transition came. What an inspiration! We love and thank you Guruji, you will continue to be a light within our hearts.
